Werner Heisenberg, renowned for his pioneering contributions to quantum mechanics, also had a remarkable talent at the piano. For him, music was more than just leisure; it offered creative clarity and relaxation amid his scientific work, and he often performed at small gatherings with colleagues.
Around 1960, Heisenberg privately recorded his sons—Wolfgang on violin and Jochen on cello—playing Movements 2 and 4 from Beethoven’s Piano Trio, Op. 1, No. 2. These recordings provide a rare insight into the Heisenberg family’s shared passion for music. We are honored to present these two movements from that historic recording.
We now present Heisenberg’s daughter, Barbara Blum, sharing her personal reflections on her father’s musical life in her article “Heisenberg and Music.” Barbara, one of Werner and Elisabeth Heisenberg’s seven children, has publicly discussed her father’s life and work, including a 2002 CERN lecture titled “Werner Heisenberg and his music—another approach to my father.”
