Abstract

Many AI researchers believe that current AI technology will inevitably lead to the development of artificial general intelligence\label{intelligence}, or AGI — a higher form of AI capable of thinking like humans or above the human level, including reasoning, planning, and the ability to learn from experience. 1Some believe that AGI’s power could increase exponentially based on the argument that, if a computer system can write code — case in point is ChatGPT — then it might eventually learn to progressively improve itself until a point known as “the singularity’’ is reached. It is the long-prophesied moment when mechanical minds would surpass human brains, quantitatively, in terms of processing speed and memory size, and qualitatively, in terms of intellectual insight, artistic creativity and every other distinctively human faculty, causing us to lose control of our destiny.

  1. Intelligence is a multifaceted and elusive concept that has long challenged psychologists, philosophers, and computer scientists alike. There is no generally agreed upon definition of intelligence. One aspect that is broadly accepted is that intelligence is not limited to a specific domain or task, but rather encompasses a wide range of cognitive skills and abilities. Building an artificial system that exhibits such broad behavior is a long-standing and ambitious goal of AI research~ ↩︎
